Summer Swim Safety: My Tips for Responsibly Enjoying Water Activities

As someone who started my swimming journey with the Wellington Sharks Swim Team when I was just 4 years old, I understand the allure of water activities, especially during the hot summer months. However, it's essential that safety remains our top priority when swimming or engaging in any water activities. Let me share with you some crucial tips to ensure you and your family enjoy the water responsibly and safely this summer.

1. Supervision is Key

No matter the swimmer's skill level, constant, active supervision is critical when children are in or around water. Distractions should be minimized to ensure the safety of all participants. Remember, accidents can happen quickly.

2. Start with Swim Lessons

As a swim coach, I can't stress enough the importance of proper swim lessons for all age groups. Swim lessons equip individuals with essential skills, not only to swim efficiently but also to respond effectively in potential water emergencies.

3. Understand and Respect Water Rules

Ensure everyone in your family understands and respects the rules and safety guidelines set by pools, beaches, or any water bodies you visit. These could include not running around pool areas, only swimming in designated zones, and following lifeguard instructions.

4. Use Safety Gear

Safety gear such as life jackets, floaties, or pool noodles should be used, especially for young or inexperienced swimmers. However, remember that they are aids, not a substitute for supervision or the ability to swim.

5. Learn Basic Lifesaving Skills

Knowing basic lifesaving skills, including CPR and basic water rescue techniques, can be invaluable in an emergency. It's a good idea for all adults in the family to learn these skills.

Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, and water activities often play a significant role in the season's enjoyment. However, it's crucial that we enjoy these activities responsibly. As a swim coach and a former member of a swim team, I've seen the difference that these safety tips can make. So, gear up, stay vigilant, and have a fantastic, safe summer in the water!
